lokāh: all locations, realms samastāh: all beings sukhino: to be happy, joyful bhav: the divine state antu: may it be so
"May all beings in all realms be at peace."
"Lokah samastha" is a peace mantra from a longer sloka. It is not found in the Vedas but encapsulates the spirit of Yoga: to practice Yoga for ourselves but also for the happiness of all beings. It allows the mind to become expansive as we go beyond the notions of self-identity to that of every being and thing, manifest or unmanifest, contained within the potentiality of Consciousness itself.
Sanskrit is a vibratory language which means the sound encapsulates or patterns the experience itself. By chanting and attuning to this universal spirit, we are pulled into a divine state of Unity. When sung with others, either at the beginning of a yoga practice or at the end, this chant can serve to align all participants in a deep state of calm.
